Capital of Missouri

Jefferson City is proud to be the capital of Missouri State, and the Missouri Capitol Building expresses this superbly. Modeled after the United States Capitol in Washington, DC, this architecture boasts an impressive rotunda and striking artwork. We recommend taking a tour of this structure – and paying close attention to the artistic decorations!

History buffs should continue their tour of Jefferson City with a stop at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Founded in 1836, this eery complex has 180+ years of historic tales hidden in its walls. Don’t miss the dungeon, housing units and upper yard. Teens and adults alike will get a thrill out of winding through the old hallways and hearing the stories of infamous inmates, such as how Martin Luther King’s assassin escaped from his cell here. For a closer look at prison life, follow this with a trip to the Museum State Penitentiary Museum in Jefferson City. You can get behind the bars of an authentic prison cell, complete with bunk bed and graffiti.

The Great Outdoors

If spending so much time exploring history leaves you restless to wander the great Missouri outdoors, head to Runge Nature Center. You’ll learn all about the local forestland, wildlife and fish. There are 3,000 square feet of exhibits, as well as many self-guided trails through the scenic nature of Jefferson City. A specialized trail is accessible to people with disabilities.
